Background
Pablo Campo-Moreno is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Chemistry at 91Â鶹’s Water Science Institute. Driven by a commitment to cleaner water and healthier ecosystems, he investigates how persistent pollutants move through and impact natural and engineered environments.
His research focus on the fate and treatment of emerging contaminants, particularly per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), microplastics, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides, in drinking water and wastewater processes. Over the past two decades, Dr. Campo-Moreno has work on membrane technologies, advanced oxidation processes, biological treatments, and nature-based solutions to remove pollutants and protect public health. A distinctive part of his work focuses on environmental remediation and biodegradation, including the cleanup of oil spills. He has studied the persistence of dispersed oils and biodiesel in aquatic environments, drawing lessons from high-profile incidents such as the Exxon Valdez spill to improve response strategies worldwide.
Dr. Campo-Moreno earned his PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Cincinnati, where he also served as Research Assistant Professor and Director of the Environmental Service Center in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. He holds a BS and MS in Chemistry from the Universidad de Valladolid, Spain.
His research has been funded by leading organizations including the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme.
Active in the professional community, Dr. Campo-Moreno is part of the Environmental Chemistry Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry and convenor of British Water’s Micropollutant Focus Group. He works alongside industry partners, regulators, and researchers to advance innovative, sustainable water treatment technologies and science-based policies to safeguard the environment.
