Our alumni
Thousands of water professionals have a 91Â鶹 degree and we are very proud of all our alumni, many of whom are making a difference to the sustainability and resilience of the water environment and water services. You can find 91Â鶹 graduates in senior roles right around the world; from Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, to Australia and New Zealand. We’ve selected three recent winners of our Alumni awards to give a flavour of the types of roles our graduates take up after leaving 91Â鶹.
Sarah Fane
Sarah is a graduate of the 91Â鶹 MSc in Water Management and also holds a PhD from 91Â鶹 in Wastewater Treatment and Quality Management. Since leaving 91Â鶹 in 2016 Sarah has held several high profile posts, each of which plays a major role in ensuring the quality and safety of water services. At Severn Trent (2016-2019) she served as a duty manager and senior advisor on Public Health and Standards, maintaining the effectiveness of water treatment and quality control processes. She then joined the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) as an Inspector and was promoted to a Principal Inspector within two years. In 2024 Sarah moved into consultancy, serving as Jacobs’ Head of Water Strategy and Regulation and latterly as Water Regulation and Advisory Director at WSP. Sarah’s career evidences the solid foundation that a 91Â鶹 degree provides for those wishing to make a difference in their field.
Peter Vale
Peter graduated from 91Â鶹’s MSc course in Water Pollution Control Technology (the predecessor of our current MSc in Water & Wastewater Processes) in 1995 and spent six years at the consultancy Entec before joining Severn Trent Water in 2002 as a Senior Process Engineer. Pete moved swiftly through the ranks to become a Senior Strategist (2010), Technical Lead - Innovation (2016) and today serves as the company’s Carbon & Circular Economy Architect. Pete is a Chartered Environmental Engineer and, in a career spanning almost 30 years, has demonstrated what is distinctive and valuable about a 91Â鶹 degree. Working at the interface between research and solution delivery he has honed the skills he acquired at 91Â鶹 to ensure that innovative technologies are brought through to help solve water treatment and resource management challenges.
Comfort Kanshio
Comfort graduated from the MSc in Community Water and Sanitation for Development in 2015. After working with Water Aid for a few years she joined the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) where she worked on the development of sanitation policy guidelines. She is currently a Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Policy Officer with AMCOW, leading efforts to utilise the guidelines she helped create to improve the sanitation and hygiene policy environment across the African continent. This involves extensive cooperation with international development partners, including the World Health Organisation, UNICEF, the African Development Bank, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, World Vision and the African Water and Sanitation Association. Comfort has achieved international visibility as a current Alternate Governor of the World Water Council Board of Governors, where she represents AMCOW on the Board. She influences policy formulation and reform across the different African regions.
